Halfback Mountain Soap began with the simple desire to find a soap that was right for me and my skin. After years of using the 99 & 44/100% pure option, and still having dry, sometimes itchy skin, I moved on to the hypoallergenic variety (dermatologist tested). While probably a step in the right direction, it really didn’t deliver. I turned one of the bars over, and WOW, look at all those chemicals!
One bright spring day I was soaking up sun on my front deck, gazing at the big white clouds moving lazily among the mountain tops surrounding me, while breathing that fresh mountain air. Robins happily gobbled up worms, birdsong filled the air… Ah the aroma of spring (and strong coffee)….
As my mind roamed free, I thought about my soap dilemma… Could soap be made without all those chemicals, made in such a way that skin was nourished, rather than dried out? Pure as the mountain stream behind me, clean as this mountain air? The answer is a resounding YES!
The journey started there, and after doing some research, I made my first batch of soap, just an olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil blend. Success!! From there I began to study how each of the different oils, butters, and other ingredients affect the finished product, with the goal of a soap that is moisturizing in addition to cleansing, like conditioning shampoo. Even the colorants and essential oils used are known to be beneficial to the skin.
